Formaldehyde is a colorless, strong-smelling gas used in making building materials, it is found in resins that act as a glue in the manufacture of pressed wood products. As a consequence, higher level formaldehyde released to newly renovated interiors from carpentry works, furniture, floorings, etc.

The US National Cancer Institute (NCI) listed Formaldehyde as one of the substances which most likely carcinogens to affect human health. When formaldehyde is present in the air at levels exceeding 0.1 ppm, some individuals may experience of the adverse effects such as watery eyes; burning sensations in the eyes, nose, etc. The Formaldehyde Emission Standards for Composite Wood Products Act of 2010 established emission standards for formaldehyde from composite wood products.

 

E0 formaldehyde release less than 0.5mg/L, the E0 board can be directly used for indoor

E1 formaldehyde release less than 1.5mg/L, the E1 board can be directly used for indoor

E2 formaldehyde release less than 5.0mg/L, must allow for interior finishes treatment

Most market available plywood are E0-E2 standard, which explains the commonly feeling of burning sensations in the eyes and nose when step into the newly renovated interiors.
